Implantable Drug Delivery

Targeted drug delivery is a safe, proven, effective way to manage chronic pain or spasticity with fewer side effects using much lower doses of medication.

This provides effective results by delivering medication directly to the fluid surrounding the spinal cord via a programmable, implantable pump.

A referral IS REQUIRED for this service.

Potential Benefits

Improved ability to function and participate in day-to-day activities

Effective pain relief

Less or no need for oral pain medication

Fewer side effects compared to oral medication

Personalized — allows you to manage your own pain therapy by delivering a dose of medication within your doctor’s pre-set limits.

Advantages over other treatments

Because targeted drug delivery releases small amounts of medication directly to the fluid surrounding your spine, pain can be controlled with a fraction of the oral medication dose.

Most people experience fewer or more tolerable side effects versus oral dosing, such as constipation and drowsiness.

Targeted drug delivery may provide relief when other treatments, like oral medications or injections, have not.

It does not have to be a permanent procedure like back surgery.

The trial serves as a temporary evaluation period before committing to long-term therapy.

Meet Dr. Stensland

Dr. Stensland is a physiatrist, a doctor trained to treat a wide variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. He is double board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine.

Dr. Stensland evaluates patients who are suffering chronic pain to ensure all conservative measures have been exhausted prior to considering an intrathecal pump as the next step. Together, he and the patient discuss options with the goal of helping the patient improve their quality of life without the constant struggle of pain. He may recommend an intrathecal pain pump for patients who have not successfully been able to reduce their pain symptoms using other conservative treatments or surgery.

Important information:

Since all patients considering an implantable device need the same information prior to deciding if it is a desirable option, Dr. Stensland hosts an educational meeting on predetermined dates. We ask you first attend one of his meetings before scheduling an office visit with Dr. Stensland for a complete evaluation.

TO ATTEND THIS CLASS, PLEASE RSVP TO 260-432-1800, ext 324.

Meet Our Team

Nick is a registered nurse. Once patients have their pump implanted, they will come to our office on a regular basis (every couple of months) to have medication added to the pump reservoir. Nick communicates with our patients regularly and works under the supervision of Dr. Stensland, scheduling and performing the intrathecal pain pump refills and adjustments.
