What to Expect on Your Initial Evaluation

Our initial evaluation process involves an in-depth evaluation of multiple body systems to identify the root cause of your symptoms. Over the course of 1-1.5 hours, we will educate and inform all patients, and their loved ones, why they feel the way the do, what they are experiencing and what to expect throughout their recovery. Here are a few of the tests we perform.

Sideline Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT5)

The SCAT5 test is the gold standard of concussion testing that evaluates an individual’s cognitive ability, how they are thinking, balance and short term memory. This test provides crucial information to the way the brain is working following the injury.

Vestibular-Ocular Motor Screen (VOMS)

The VOMS assessment is an in-depth evaluation of the vestibular (balance) system and the ocular (vision) systems and how they are communicating. This assessment provides adequate information to establish our customized rehabilitation plan for our patients.

Modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction in Balance (mCTSIB)

This short balance assessment is utilized to further evaluate the patient’s vestibular system by adding an element of instability, standing on foam. This test challenges the patient’s ability to maintain balance through various changes in head position and visual feedback.

Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test (BCTT)

The BCTT is a simple treadmill test that we use to assess the patient’s sub-symptomatic threshold, or the heart rate level a patient can achieve without increasing symptoms. Aerobic exercise is a significant component of concussion recovery, and this test provides a heart rate max and exercise duration time we can provide to patients to guide their recovery.

Electroencephalogram (EEG)

In some patients, we utilize an EEG to assess how the patient’s brainwaves are being transferred through their brain. We all have a brain-beat, similar to your heartbeat, that can be disrupted following concussions. This test provides visual feedback on how the brain is sending it’s electrical signals throughout the brain itself. This test can help fine tune our rehabilitation plan to incorporate areas of the brain that are not carrying the signals effciently.

"Highly recommend Midwest Concussion Clinic! Our family was well educated on the diagnosis, and therapy that our daughter needed to recover from a concussion she sustained during cheerleading practice. The amount of passion and determination Matt has in helping his patients heal and return back to normal activities was made clear very quickly at our first appointment. The entire staff at MWCC was super kind from scheduling to check in, evaluations, speaking with the doctor, and working through therapy sessions with Matt. We are so grateful to had been cared for by MWCC!!!"
